On being a better ally

As part of our NuVasive Diversity and Inclusion strategy, we are hosting our first-ever virtual Pride event this month. In the weeks leading up to the event, we will be taking time to educate ourselves and learn more about the LGBTQ+ community, how to create an inclusive workplace, and what it means to be an ally. Learn more about allyship and a few ways that you can be a better ally and foster a culture of inclusion below.

What is an ally?

An ally is someone who acts with and for others in pursuit of ending oppression and creating equality in his, her, their own personal and professional life.

What does it mean to be an ally?

Being an ally is:

  • a lifelong process of building relationships based on trust, consistency, and accountability with marginalized individuals and/or groups of people.
  • not self-defined—work and efforts must be recognized by those you are seeking to ally with.
  • an opportunity to grow and learn about ourselves, while building confidence in others.

Tips on how to be an ally:

  • Take initiative to educate yourself
  • Learn and use correct and inclusive language
  • Listen and amplify voices within the community
  • Speak up or intervene
