As part of the NUVA culture, we love having our employees gather together to celebrate successes and share the latest events at NuVasive. Among our many NUVA events is our Thirsty Thursdays, where we spend an afternoon enjoying drinks and appetizers at our back patio and get the scoop on NUVA’s contributions in the latest events. For this week’s Thirsty Thursday, Padres Pedal the Cause representative, Megan Parker, helped incorporate the charity’s fundraiser within our quarterly happy hour.
With Pedal the Cause less than three months away, it was a great afternoon raising even more funds for cancer research. We hosted 14-year-old, Travis Hackett, the child we are sponsoring through the Ride for a Child program, who told his story about being diagnosed just before his eleventh birthday with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Travis will be riding over the Coronado Bay Bridge with over half of Team NuVasive in November.
“I was lucky. I got the beatable kind of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and now I’m only six months away from being cancer free.”
-Travis Hackett
Pedal the Cause is a non-profit public benefit corporation that hosts an annual two-day cycling fundraiser at Petco Park. Partnering with the Padres, Pedal the Cause has raised over $4.75 million since 2013. Their mission is to create a world without cancer by donating 100% of the funds to four local beneficiaries: Moores Cancer Center San Diego, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, SALK Institute for Biological Studies, and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego.
Team NuVasive has been riding in Pedal the Cause for two years, with the hopes of living in a world that is cancer free. Our 2017 team is up to 46 riders and counting, and we continue to add more Shareowners and their families to the Pedal the Cause community. Special thanks to our two-year team captain, Mark Ojeda, for leading Team NuVasive! We hope to see you on the course on November 11-12!
