PRECICE® Patient: Mark DuMoulin

Mark’s doctor, S. Robert Rozbruch, MD, Chief, Limb Lengthening and Complex Reconstruction Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, worked with Mark to explain his options after a surgery that removed twenty-one centimeters of his femur bone and left his right leg two inches shorter than his left leg.

“To leave him two inches short is not an option,”

Mark’s initial surgery also left him to recover afterwards with an external fixator. That wasn’t the case with Mark’s limb lengthening procedure with PRECICE®. “There’s nothing sticking out of the leg, there’s no external fixator,” said Dr. Rozbruch. “The whole recovery process is completely easier. It is not even comparable.”

Our PRECICE system uses an adjustable intramedullary device that incorporates remote control technology using magnets. The non-invasive magnetic interaction between the PRECICE implant and the PRECICE External Remote Controller, a portable, hand-held unit that lengthens the PRECICE implant is what sets this system apart from traditional treatment.

“It’s sort of surreal to think about the fact that I have gotten back to this point in my life,” said Mark of his recovery.

Mark and Dr. Rozbruch, both avid cyclists, even got to get on their bikes and challenge each other on a ride. “He’s been able to rehabilitate and become extremely strong,” said Dr. Rozbruch.
