NuVasive is committed to supporting global independent research and professional continuing education activities that align with the NuVasive mission, benefit the medical community, and advance patient care.

Research

NuVasive grants support clinical research that is initiated, sponsored, and conducted by independent investigators. Support may consist of an independent monetary grant, provision of free study product, other in-kind contributions, or any combination thereof. The objective in providing support for these studies is to obtain valuable clinical and scientific information important to surgeons, to their patients, and to NuVasive.

To apply for research project funding, please complete the following steps for consideration by the NuVasive grants committee.

  • Visit the grant application portal to register and submit your request. Additional instructions on how to register and complete the application can be found here.
  • Checklist of supporting documentation required with submission:
    • Written grant request on the requesting institution’s letterhead that describes the proposed focus of research.
    • If in support of a study, please include the study protocol, which should identify any sub-investigators and describe the size of the study, the endpoints, the study design, how the study will add to existing knowledge about the product, as well as a detailed study budget and how the grant funding will be used.
    • Relevant tax documents (i.e., for the U.S. a W-9 IRS form or for international a W-8BEN form with signature/date within the last year)
    • Charitable organizations should provide IRS determination letter or documentation supporting status as a charitable entity. 
    • Incomplete applications will not be presented to the grants committee until complete.

Please allow a minimum of eight weeks for review. You will be informed by email of the committee’s decision. If approved, a letter outlining the terms and conditions of the grant will be sent via email followed by the distribution of funds. Please note that acceptance of the Funds will be deemed acceptance of the terms and conditions provided in the grant letter upon approval.

Please note that funding for approved grants will be made to the affiliated institution/organization, not an individual. Academic research grants are reportable under the Sunshine Act in the United States, if applicable, the primary investigator’s full name, NPI number, and name of the study must be provided prior to disbursement of funds.

Fellowship programs

NuVasive may provide fellowship grants to academic institutions, nonprofit organizations or other entities whose purpose is to support genuine medical education of medical students, residents, and fellows participating in orthopedic or neurosurgery spine or specialty orthopedics fellowship programs.

To apply for fellowship program funding, please complete the following steps for consideration by the NuVasive grants committee.

The fellowship application window is now OPEN for the 2023-2024 academic year.  Please ensure your submission is in by the first week in September 2022. 

  • Visit the grant application portal to register and submit your request. Additional instructions on how to register and complete the application can be found here.
  • Checklist of supporting documentation required with submission:
    • Written grant request on requesting institution’s letterhead that describes the proposed focus of the fellowship program (training/research).
    • Program outline including education expectations of the fellow (clinic time, research, classes, etc.), a detailed budget for how the funds will be used, as well as a pedigree of past alumni and recent graduates from the program.
    • Curriculum vitae of the fellow, if available. Note: the CV, full name of the fellow and NPI number will be required in advance of the distribution of funds.
    • Relevant tax documents (i.e., for the U.S. a W-9 IRS form or for international a W-8BEN form with signature/date within the last year)
    • Charitable organizations should provide IRS determination letter or documentation supporting status as a charitable entity.
    • Incomplete applications will not be presented to the grants committee until complete.

Fellowship applications are reviewed following the deadline, September through December.  The committee’s decision is communicated in Q1 (January-March) with funding in July. If approved, a letter outlining the terms and conditions of the grant will be sent via email followed by the distribution of funds. Please note that acceptance of the funds will be deemed acceptance of the terms and conditions outlined in the grant letter upon approval.

Educational activities

Educational or scientific meeting (accredited or non-accredited)

NuVasive grants support educational events with a focus to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional competence of healthcare professionals  that are provided by an independent educational provider, such as a hospital, academic center, society/association or medical education company which may include accredited or non-accredited programs.

To apply for educational or scientific meeting funding, please complete the following steps for consideration by the NuVasive grants committee.

  • Visit the grant application portal to register and submit your request. Additional instructions on how to register and complete the application can be found here.
  • Checklist of supporting documentation required with submission:
    • Written grant request on the requesting sponsor’s letterhead, including description of the program, names of any co-sponsors, proposed date(s), location(s), topic(s) to be covered, name(s) of faculty (or number if faculty have not yet been designated), anticipated number of attendees, and whether the program will be accredited by the accreditation council for continuing medical education (ACCME).
    • Detailed event budget
    • For an accredited educational event please provide a copy of the accreditation certificate.
    • Copies of the proposed agenda and any promotional materials that have been prepared, if available.
    • Relevant tax documents (i.e., for the U.S. a W-9 IRS form or for international a W-8BEN form with signature/date within the last year)
    • Charitable organizations should provide IRS determination letter or documentation supporting status as a charitable entity.
    • Incomplete applications will not be presented to the grants committee until complete.

Travel expenses for healthcare professional

NuVasive provides a limited number of grants to institutions and major societies to cover travel and accommodation expenses for healthcare professionals to attend spine or specialty orthopedics focused congresses/conferences.

To apply for funding, please complete the following steps for consideration by the NuVasive grants committee.

  • Visit the grant application portal to register and submit your request. Additional instructions on how to register and complete the application can be found here.
  • Checklist of supporting documentation required with submission:
    • Written grant request on the institution’s letterhead describing the proposed meeting and indicate how the meeting fulfills the desired educational experience.
    • Curriculum vitae of the recipient. Note: the CV, full name and NPI number will be required in advance of any grant payment.
    • Requested travel budget and/or travel itinerary, if available.
    • Any abstracts or materials to be presented at the meeting by the recipient, if available.
    • Relevant tax documents (i.e., for the U.S. a W-9 IRS form or for international a W-8BEN form with signature/date within the last year)
    • Charitable organizations should provide IRS determination letter or documentation supporting status as a charitable entity.
    • Incomplete applications will not be presented to the grants committee until complete.

Charitable donations

NuVasive grants occasionally support charitable donations to spine or specialty orthopedics focused professional and/or patient organizations whose organizational objectives align within the scope of research and education.

To apply for a charitable donation, please complete the following steps for consideration by the NuVasive grants committee.

  • Visit the grant application portal to register and submit your request. Additional instructions on how to register and complete the application can be found here.
  • Checklist of supporting documentation required with submission:
    • Written grant request on the requesting organization's letterhead that describes the mission of the charitable organization and the proposed focus and summary description of project to be funded, including how the project will benefit patient care, knowledge, or other public health objectives.
    • A detailed budget and how the requested funding will be used.
    • Relevant tax documents (i.e., for the U.S. a W-9 IRS form or for international a W-8BEN form with signature/date within the last year)
    • Charitable organizations should provide IRS determination letter or documentation supporting status as a charitable entity.
    • Incomplete applications will not be presented to the grants committee until complete.

FAQ's

How far in advance must I submit a request?

We recommend a minimum of eight weeks in advance of the activity or when funding is needed. It is important to note, NuVasive grants operates on a calendar fiscal year with a limited allocation of funding.

Can I submit a request after the submission deadline for the current year?

Yes, all requests submitted throughout the year will be considered; however, we strongly recommend that requests are submitted in advance of the deadlines provided for greater likelihood of budget availability.

How can I check on the status of my request?

You will be required to create an account on the NuVasive Grants Portal where you will submit your request and be able to log-in and check on the status. If any additional information is required during the review process, the grants administrator will reach out to you via email.  You will be notified of the outcome after the review process has been completed via email, typically eight weeks from the submission date.

How long is the review process?

Each request is reviewed by the NuVasive grants committee. Please allow eight to ten weeks for review and committee decision. If a request requires expedition, please provide justification in the online form and contact [email protected].

Will the grant funding that I receive be reportable under the Sunshine Act?

Certain transfers of value to U.S. physicians or U.S. teaching hospitals, whether provided directly or through affiliated organizations, must be disclosed in accordance with the Sunshine Act.

Is there a difference between International and U.S. grant requests?

Yes, regulatory and compliance rules vary by country. As a global organization, we support activities based on the local laws. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions specific to your region.

Can I submit a request for an exhibit fee only?

No, exhibit fee requests are managed by the NuVasive Event Marketing Team. Please send exhibit request and any supporting materials to [email protected].

Do you offer in-kind donations of product?

Yes, NuVasive may support requests of in-kind product for use in indigent patient care as well as product to be used for non-patient research and/or educational purposes.

Can a non-spine/non-specialty orthopedics charitable organization apply for a grant donation? 

NuVasive grants are made based on alignment with the NuVasive mission. If your organization is not spine or specialty orthopedic research and/or education focused, please email your request to NuVasive human resources at [email protected].

I have a copy of a 2009 W-9 form, is this the current version?

No, the current downloadable W-9 form can be found on the IRS website, NuVasive corporate grants can only accept the current version of the form that is signed and dated with the year of request.

What are the general terms and conditions for submitting a grant request?

All grant applications submitted are conditioned on the following.  If approved, more detailed terms and conditions will be outlined in the grant letter.

    1. Grantee has fully and accurately described the purpose and intended use of the requested funds in its request for the Grant, will use such funds as described, and will otherwise comply with the terms of the Grant set forth in the request.
    2. Grantee agrees and acknowledges that the provision or receipt of the Grant is not intended to induce Grantee to use or purchase, or refer, recommend or arrange for the use or purchase of, any items or services sold or provided by Grantor.
    3. Grantee will use Grant funds only for the bona fide educational, research or charitable purposes described in its request for the Grant, and not for meals, entertainment or recreational activities unrelated to such bona fide purposes.
    4. Grantor has not exercised and will not exercise any control over Grantee's selection of health care providers or other individuals to participate in the activities or events supported by the Grant, and has not exercised and will not exercise any control over the content of any programs or activities supported by the Grant.
