2022 Diversity + Inclusion recap

As our Diversity and Inclusion (D+I) journey continues, we are grateful for the efforts and support from our employees throughout 2022.

Read below to learn more about the celebrations and dialogue that took place during the year.

Black History Month
During February, we recognized and celebrated the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. history and the world. With three events centered around the theme of Black Health and Wellness, employees came together to celebrate, raise awareness and discuss the importance of Black Health and Wellness and how we can support the Black community.

The first event focused on mental health in the Black community. Employees heard from four mental health professionals: Alexis Jones, Edward Brown, Dr. Anitra Shelton-Quinn, and Kristen Brooks. The panel covered topics such as how to know when to ask for help, how to combat stigma attached to mental health, and resources that are available for the Black community. Chief Information Officer and the executive sponsor for Black History Month, Aviva McPherron moderated the panel and facilitated employee dialogue around the topic and Q+A.

Celebrate Women
Our Women In NuVasive (WIN) employee resource group hosted a series of events to honor and Celebrate Women throughout the month of March, focused on the international theme for 2022, #BreakTheBias.

During the events, WIN members discussed their personal journeys, who inspires them, where their career path has taken them, and ways women can empower themselves and others. And employees engaged in an open dialogue related to unconscious bias and ways to break bias.

WIN is a women-led organization that is focused on being an internal resource that supports women in advancing their skills through connection and education.

NUVA Pride

We hosted NUVA Pride in June to recognize, support and celebrate individuality by elevating LGBTQIA+ voices and highlighting our shared humanity. Events included employees sharing their personal journeys and ways we can support the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as conversations around inclusive language and how identity factors shape our perceptions or our reality.

Hispanic Heritage Month
In October, we celebrated the achievements, traditions and cultural diversity of Hispanic Americans whose heritage is rooted in 20 Latin American countries and territories.

To kick off celebrations, our D+I team along with our Chief Technology Officer and executive sponsor Ryan Donahoe hosted our Hispanic Heritage Month event + Employee Experience Panel where employees shared their stories about facing and overcoming stereotypes growing up and in the workplace, as well as finding their sense of belonging while embracing multiple cultures.

Veterans Day

In honor of Veterans Day, we asked some of our very own internal veterans to share their experience with employees, including ways we can improve the workplace for veterans and what skills they learned in the military that helped prepare them for their current role at NuVasive.

Thank you to all our employees who led, partnered and engaged in the various events this year. The passion and commitment from our employees get us closer to establishing a world-class culture of inclusion that accelerates innovation and advances patient care.
