Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer
Alexis V. Lukianov has served as our President, our Chief Executive Officer, and a director since July 1999, and as Chairman of our Board of Directors since February 2004. Mr. Lukianov has nearly 25 years of experience in the orthopaedic industry, including 20 years in senior management. Prior to joining NuVasive®, he was a founder, and served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, of BackCare Group, Inc. (a spine physician practice management company). Mr. Lukianov also held various executive positions with Medtronic Sofamor Danek, including President of US operations. He also directed a business unit at Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics and managed an orthopaedic joint venture between Stryker and Meadox Medical. Mr. Lukianov attended Rutgers University and served in the U.S. Navy. He serves on the boards and the executive committees of BIOCOM and the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA). Mr. Lukianov also serves on the boards of Volcano Corporation, a publicly traded company that develops products that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular and structural heart disease, and Ophthonix, Inc., a privately held company focused on vision correction technology.
President & Chief Operating Officer
Keith C. Valentine has served as our President and Chief Operating Officer since January 2007. Between December 2004 and January 2007, he served as our President, and between January 2002 and December 2004, he served as our Executive Vice President. Prior to that, he served as our Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development. With over 15 years of experience in the orthopaedic industry, Mr. Valentine served as Vice President of Marketing at ORATEC Interventions, Inc. (a medical device company which was later acquired by Smith & Nephew PLC), and during his eight years with Medtronic Sofamor Danek, he served in various capacities (including Vice President of Marketing for the Rods Division and Group Director for the BMP Biologics program, the Interbody Sales Development effort, and International Sales and Marketing). Mr. Valentine received a B.B.A. in Management and Biomedical Sciences from Western Michigan University.
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Michael J. Lambert has served as our Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since November 2009. Mr. Lambert joined NuVasive from Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (“AMO”), where he served as Chief Financial Officer of the publicly held ophthalmic medical device maker with over $1 billion in annual revenues. Prior to his tenure with AMO, Mr. Lambert was Chief Financial Officer of Quest Software, Inc., a publicly held, high-growth enterprise systems management software developer. He has also held key financial roles with other publicly traded companies, including Quantum Corporation, and the data networking division of Lucent Technologies. Mr. Lambert received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Stonehill College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
President, Global Products and Services
Patrick Miles has served as our President of Global Products and Services since October 2011. Prior to that he served as President of the Americas from January 2010 to September 2011, Executive Vice President of Product Marketing and Development from January 2007 to December 2009, as our Senior Vice President of Marketing from December 2004 until January 2007, and as our Vice President, Marketing from January 2001 until December 2004. Mr. Miles has over 15 years of experience in the orthopaedic industry. He served as Director of Marketing for ORATEC Interventions, Inc., a medical device company and as a Director of Marketing for Minimally Invasive Systems and Cervical Spine Systems for Medtronic Sofamor Danek. Prior to that, he held several positions with Smith & Nephew. Mr. Miles received a B.S. in Finance from Mercer University.
Executive Vice President & General Counsel
Jason M. Hannon has served as our Executive Vice President & General Counsel since January 2010. Prior to that, Mr. Hannon served as our Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, General Counsel, and Secretary from January 2009 until December 2009, as our Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary, and as our Vice President of Legal Affairs and Secretary from June 2005 until January 2009. Prior to joining NuVasive, Mr. Hannon practiced corporate and transactional law at the law firms of Brobeck Phleger & Harrison LLP and Heller Ehrman LLP, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, public and private financing, joint ventures, licensing arrangements, and corporate governance matters. Mr. Hannon also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerome Farris of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Hannon received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.
President, Global Sales
Jeffrey P. Rydin has served as our President of Global Sales since October 2011. Prior to that he served as Executive Vice President, Americas, Sales & Chairman of the Global Sales Executive Committee from January 2010 to September 2011 and as Senior Vice President of U.S. Sales from December 2005 to December 2009. Prior to joining us, from January 2003 until December 2005, Mr. Rydin served as Area Vice President of Orthobiologics for DePuy Spine, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Mr. Rydin has nearly 20 years of sales experience in the healthcare industry. He has served as Vice President of Sales at Orquest, Inc., a developer of biologically based implants for orthopaedics and spine surgery, which was acquired by DePuy. Prior to that, he served as Director of Sales at Symphonix Devices, Inc., a hearing technology company, and as Director of Sales at General Surgical Innovations, Inc. a developer, manufacturer, and marketer of tissue dissection systems for minimally invasive surgical procedures, which was acquired by Tyco International, Ltd. Mr. Rydin holds a B.A. in Social Ecology from the University of California, Irvine.
Executive Vice President of Asia Pacific
Takaaki Tanaka has served as our Executive Vice President of Asia Pacific since November 2009. Between September 2009 and November 2009, he worked as the Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific for NuVasive. With over 20 years of experience in the spine industry, Mr. Tanaka served most recently as Vice President of Medtronic’s Asian Pacific Spinal and Navigation Division. Mr. Tanaka received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Osaka Institute of Technology.
Executive Vice President of Europe
Stephan Siemers has served as our Executive Vice President of Europe since September 2009. Between April 2009 and September 2009, he worked as the Managing Director of Germany for NuVasive Europe. With over 20 years of experience in the spine industry, Mr. Siemers served most recently as President of DePuy Spine International and the Managing Director of DePuy Germany. Mr. Siemers received a Certificate of International Commerce and Trading from the Chamber of Commerce in Bremen.
Executive Vice President, Global Operations
Tyler P. Lipschultz has served as our Executive Vice President of Global Operations since October 2011. Prior to that he served as Executive Vice President of Biologics since January 2011 and our Senior Vice President, Biologics since June 2008. Prior to joining NuVasive, Mr. Lipschultz was a Director at ProtoStar, a medical device incubator that formed Annulex, CVRx, and VERTx, which he co-founded. In 2002, VERTx merged with Spine Wave, where Mr. Lipschultz subsequently served in a variety of roles, including Executive Vice President and General Manager of the mechanical business. Prior to ProtoStar, Mr. Lipschultz held the position of Equity Research Analyst at Piper Jaffray and served in various marketing/product management roles at Stryker, Smith & Nephew, and DePuy. He has 20 years of orthopaedic and spine experience. Mr. Lipschultz received his B.A. in Economics and Business Administration from Kalamazoo College and his M.B.A. from the Executive Program at Krannert School of Management at Purdue University.
Senior Vice President, Research and Clinical Resources
Dr. Cornwall has served as our Senior Vice President of Research and Clinical Resources since June 2008. From January 2004 until June 2008, he served as Vice President of Research and Development, and from 1999 until 2000, he managed NuVasive research efforts. Dr. Cornwall has been working in the medical device industry for more than 12 years and has been responsible for leading research and development teams in the development and testing of proprietary spinal treatment modalities with minimally invasive approaches, spinal fusion constructs, novel resorbable polymer implants, and new fracture fixation devices. Prior to rejoining NuVasive, Dr. Cornwall was with MacroPore Biosurgery for four years, most recently acting as Vice President of Research & Technology. Before joining NuVasive the first time, Dr. Cornwall was with Johnson & Johnson’s trauma division, DePuy-ACE. Dr. Cornwall’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Applied Science in Material Science, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Orthopaedic Biomechanics from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He is the author of 15 peer-reviewed publications, four book chapters, and nine U.S. patents.
Senior Vice President of Operations
William L. Reynolds has served as our Senior Vice President, Operations since September 2009. Between February 2009 and September 2009, he worked as an Operations Consultant for us. Mr. Reynolds has over 30 years experience in the orthopedic, electronics and consulting industries. He has served as Vice President and General Manager of the Warsaw Operations of Medtronic Sofamor Danek, Materials Director and Plant Manager of Hayes Microcomputer Products and Senior Consulting Manager with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). Mr. Reynolds has a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration from Auburn University.
Senior Vice President, Global Human Resources
Craig E. Hunsaker has served as our Senior Vice President, Global Human Resources since January 2011. Between November 2009 and January 2011, he was NuVasive’s Vice President, Human Resources, and before that as Vice President, Legal Affairs. Prior to joining NuVasive, Mr. Hunsaker was, for sixteen years, a practicing lawyer at several national law firms, where he represented technology and life science companies in their employment law, trade secret, and non-compete matters. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Finance and International Business from Brigham Young University and a law degree from Columbia University School of Law.
