Gregory T. Lucier
Chairman of the Board and Interim Chief Executive Officer
Gregory T. Lucier has served as our Chairman and Interim Chief Executive Officer since April 2015. He has served as a member of the NuVasive Board of Directors since December 2013. From May 2003 to February 2014, Mr. Lucier served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Life Technologies, a global life sciences company acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2014. During Mr. Lucier’s 11-year tenure at Life Technologies, he led the company from a small start-up known as Invitrogen in 2003, directed the acquisition and merger of Invitrogen with Applied Biosystems in 2008 into the renamed Life Technologies, and then transformed the organization by 2013 into a global, world-leading biotechnology firm with 50,000 products, 12,000 employees and nearly $4 billion in sales in more than 180 countries. Serving in his leadership role, Mr. Lucier was responsible for fostering a culture of excellence at Life Technologies and applied his more than 25 years of strategic management experience to help champion an era of personalized medicine. Mr. Lucier previously was a Corporate Officer of General Electric and served as an executive at GE Medical Systems. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a masters of business administration from Harvard Business School. In addition to serving on the Board of NuVasive, Mr. Lucier serves as the Board Chairman for Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute and is a former director of CareFusion Corporation, now part of Becton, Dickinson & Co.
Keith C. Valentine
Special Advisor to the CEO
Keith C. Valentine currently serves as a Special Advisor to NuVasive Interim CEO Gregory Lucier. In this role, Mr. Valentine, who is a recognized leader in the orthopedics industry with more than 20 years of experience, provides strategic counsel to the CEO across all aspects of the business. In January 2015, Mr. Valentine announced plans to step down from his role as Chief Operating Officer and will be leaving the Company effective April 30, 2015. Previously, Mr. Valentine served as our Chief Operating Officer from January 2007 to January 2015, President from December 2004 and January 2007 and Executive Vice President from January 2002 and December 2004. Prior to that, he served as our Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development. With more than 20 years of experience in the orthopedic industry, Mr. Valentine served as Vice President of Marketing at ORATEC Interventions, Inc. (a medical device company which was later acquired by Smith & Nephew PLC), and during his eight years with Medtronic Sofamor Danek, he served in various capacities (including Vice President of Marketing for the Rods Division and Group Director for the BMP Biologics program, the Interbody Sales Development effort, and International Sales and Marketing). Mr. Valentine received a B.B.A. in Management and Biomedical Sciences from Western Michigan University.
President and Chief Operating Officer
Patrick Miles has served as our President and Chief Operating Officer since February 2015 and is responsible for leadership and management of NuVasive’s global products and services, as well as operational duties, including customer fulfillment, manufacturing, supply chain management and quality engineering. Prior to that, he served as our President of Global Products and Services from October 2011 to January 2015, President of the Americas from January 2010 to September 2011, Executive Vice President of Product Marketing and Development from January 2007 to December 2009, as our Senior Vice President of Marketing from December 2004 to January 2007, and as our Vice President, Marketing from January 2001 to December 2004. Mr. Miles has more than 20 years of experience in the orthopaedic industry. He served as Director of Marketing for ORATEC Interventions, Inc., a medical device company, and as a Director of Marketing for Minimally Invasive Systems and Cervical Spine Systems for Medtronic Sofamor Danek. Prior to that, he held several positions with Smith & Nephew. Mr. Miles received a B.S. in Finance from Mercer University.
President, U.S. Sales and Service
Matt Link has served as our President, U.S. Sales and Service since February 2015 and is responsible for the leadership of all U.S. field personnel under NuVasive’s combined sales and service organization structure, which includes the management of the Company’s field sales, clinical associates, neurophysiologists and monitoring contracting. Prior to that, Mr. Link served as our Executive Vice President of U.S. Sales from January 2013 to January 2015 and Senior Vice President of U.S. Sales from January 2012 to December 2012. Mr. Link joined NuVasive in 2006 as an Area Business Manager in Virginia and has more than 12 years of experience in the healthcare industry serving in several regional sales positions with DePuy Orthopedics and DePuy Spine. Mr. Link received a BSEd in Physical Education and Sports Medicine from the University of Virginia.
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Quentin Blackford has served as our Chief Financial Officer since August 2014. Prior to that he served as Executive Vice President of Finance and Investor Relations since July 2012, and previously served as Vice President, Finance from January 2011. Mr. Blackford joined NuVasive in 2009 as our Corporate Controller and has more than 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including his time at Zimmer Holdings, Inc. where he held various roles and responsibilities, including the Director of Finance & Controller for Zimmer’s Dental Division where he was responsible for all finance, accounting and IT activities for the worldwide division. Prior to that he was responsible for the global corporate financial planning and analysis function. Mr. Blackford is a Certified Public Accountant and obtained Bachelor of Science degrees in both Accounting and Business Administration from Grace College.
Jason M. Hannon
Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and General Counsel
Jason M. Hannon has served as our Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and General Counsel since January 2010. Prior to that, Mr. Hannon served as our Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and General Counsel. He has been with NuVasive since 2005. As General Counsel, Mr. Hannon is responsible for all legal matters pertaining to the company, including corporate and strategic transactions, litigation, risk management, etc. Through his role in leading Corporate Development and Business Development activities, Mr. Hannon also has responsibility for defining NuVasive’s long term business strategies and understanding changing market dynamics, then utilizing partnerships, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions to enable and sustain the company’s growth. Mr. Hannon’s background includes the practice of corporate and transactional law, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, public and private financing, joint ventures, licensing arrangements, and corporate governance matters (with the law firms of Brobeck Phleger & Harrison LLP and Heller Ehrman LLP). He also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerome Farris of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Hannon received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.
Executive Vice President, Strategic Sales and Operations
Scott Durall has served as our Executive Vice President of Strategic Sales and Operations since December 2012, and prior to that served as a Senior Vice President from January 2010. Mr. Durall joined NuVasive in 2008 in a regional sales leadership role and has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including corporate sales and national account management roles with Boston Scientific and United States Surgical Corp. Mr. Durall received a B.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Kentucky.
Executive Vice President, International
Russell Powers has served as our Executive Vice President of International since October of 2012. Prior to that Mr. Powers served as the Senior Vice President of Operations and Senior Vice President of Spine & Biologics, leading Marketing, Product Development and International for ThoracoLumbar, Cervical and Biologics. He was also Vice President of Reimbursement for NuVasive. With over 20 years of orthopaedic and spine experience, Mr. Powers joined NuVasive after a 13-year-career with Medtronic Spinal & Biologics in which he held various leadership positions in Marketing, Sales, and International. He was Vice President, International for Medtronic Spinal & Biologics and International Vice President, Medtronic. He served on the Executive Council and International Leadership Team, and was a Member of the Board for the Medtronic/Weigao Joint Venture. Mr. Powers began his career in orthopaedics with Smith & Nephew as a member of the Trauma Marketing team. He holds a B.B.A. from the University of Memphis.
Executive Vice President of Asia Pacific
Takaaki Tanaka has served as our Executive Vice President of Asia Pacific since November 2009. In this role, he drives sales and strategic business initiatives in the Asia Pacific region, working from Tokyo, Japan. Tanaka-san joined NuVasive with a long track record of success in driving revenue and market share gains in the Asia Pacific region, having led the Medtronic Spinal, Biologics and Navigations Divisions to the #1 market share spot for the Asia Pacific region. He brings an extensive 20 years of experience in the spine industry and in dealing with the unique dynamics of the Asia Pacific region.
Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Human Resources
Carol Cox has served as our Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Human Resources since December 2014. Prior to that she served as our Executive Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Communications. Ms. Cox is responsible for leading NuVasive’s short- and long-term business strategies, as well as creating and managing a centralized communications function to ensure global alignment of messaging and leveraging of assets across the key areas of corporate communications, investor relations, public affairs, and philanthropy. In her capacity as the head of NuVasive human resources, Ms. Cox oversees the company’s people management and development activities, partnering globally to develop the talent and leadership needed to foster innovation, drive sustainable growth, and continue to build NuVasive’s competitive cultural advantage. She joins NuVasive from Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) where she served as Senior Vice President, External Affairs, leading external and internal communications, philanthropy, marketing, government relations and efforts to elevate the Institute’s global recognition. Prior to Sanford- Burnham, she served as Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Corporate Communications at Life Technologies, where she spearheaded global strategies to drive awareness of the company’s major initiatives, enhance its global brand, and maintain its corporate reputation across multiple stakeholder groups including shareholders, the media, government officials, customers and the communities. Before joining Life Technologies, Ms. Cox was Vice President of Investor Relations at CareFusion Corporation and Senior Vice President for Global Corporate Communications and Investor Relations at Barr Pharmaceuticals, where her team received multiple awards from Institutional Investor magazine for outstanding performance. She holds a bachelor’s of arts degree in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia and a certificate in Investor Relations from The University of Connecticut School of Business.
Senior Vice President, IOS
Albert Pothier has served as our Senior Vice President, Integrated Operative Solutions™ (IOS), since July 2011, a position responsible for the marketing and product development groups for our neurophysiology and computer based technology product and service lines. Prior to that, Mr. Pothier served as our Vice President of Neuromonitoring from January 2008 to June 2011. Mr. Pothier originally joined NuVasive in April 2005 and served as our Director and Group Director of Marketing, IOS. In his 24 year career in the orthopaedic industry, Mr. Pothier also worked at Smith & Nephew in various positions in the marketing and development areas, including Director of Marketing, Computer Assisted Surgery, and Director of Market Development. Mr. Pothier received his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and an M.B.A. from Christian Brothers University.
G. Bryan Cornwall, PhD, PEng
Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations, IMI
Dr. Bryan Cornwall has served as our Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations and Research since April 2012. In this role, he works with the Integrated Operative Solutions (IOS) group with a particular focus on the clinical implementation of intraoperative monitoring services with Impulse Monitoring Inc. (IMI). From June 2008 until April 2012, he served as Senior Vice President of Research and Clinical Resources responsible for various facets of the organization including: surgeon education, post-market research, biomechanical testing, Quality Engineering and Regulatory Affairs. From January 2004 until June 2008, he served as Vice President of Research and Development, and from 1999 until 2000, he managed NuVasive research efforts. Dr. Cornwall has been working in the medical device industry for more than 15 years and has been responsible for leading research and development teams in the development and testing of proprietary spinal treatment modalities with minimally invasive approaches, spinal fusion constructs, novel resorbable polymer implants, and new fracture fixation devices. Prior to rejoining NuVasive, Dr. Cornwall was with MacroPore Biosurgery for four years, most recently acting as Vice President of Research & Technology. Before joining NuVasive the first time, Dr. Cornwall was with Johnson & Johnson’s trauma division, DePuy-ACE. Dr. Cornwall’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Applied Science in Material Science, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Orthopaedic Biomechanics from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He is the author of 20 peer-reviewed publications, six book chapters, and 15 U.S. patents.
Senior Vice President, EMEA
Paul Kosters has served as our Senior Vice President of EMEA since March 2013. Mr. Kosters has over 20 years of experience in the medical device and capital equipment industry. Prior to joining NuVasive, Mr. Kosters served as the President of Europe for Hill-Rom, President of EMEA for Wright Medical and a Business Director for Spinal Europe at Medtronic. Mr. Kosters received a M.B.A. from IESE, Barcelona, Spain and a B.B.A. from European University.
