Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer

Alexis V. Lukianov is the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of NuVasive®, Inc., a medical device company in San Diego, Calif. Since 1999, Mr. Lukianov has led a venture-backed startup to the company’s initial public offering in 2004. Today, NuVasive is the third largest spine company in the world and regarded as the leader in minimally disruptive surgical products having changed major spine surgery to outpatient procedures. The company’s innovative products and pioneering spine surgery techniques have catapulted the startup into an industry leader. Mr. Lukianov takes special pride in the company’s distinct performance culture that focuses on Speed of Innovation®- creating a sustainable competitive edge in the industry. Mr. Lukianov has over 30 years of experience in the orthopaedic industry, with nearly 25 years in senior management. Prior to joining NuVasive, he was a founder, and served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, of BackCare Group, Inc. Mr. Lukianov also held executive positions with Medtronic Sofamor Danek, including President of US. Additionally, he directed a business unit at Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics and managed an orthopaedic joint venture between Stryker Corporation and Meadox Medical. Mr. Lukianov attended Rutgers University and served in the U.S. Navy. He currently serves on the board and the executive committee of Volcano Corporation. Lukianov frequently participates on industry panels and in the media for patient advocacy and medical device industry topics.

Keith C. Valentine has served as President and Chief Operating Officer of NuVasive Inc., the fourth largest spine implant company in the world, since January 2007.  NuVasive is regarded as the world leader in minimally disruptive spinal surgery solutions.  The company’s innovative products and pioneering spine surgery techniques have catapulted the startup into an industry leader.  Between December 2004 and January 2007, Mr. Valentine served as President, and between January 2002 and December 2004, he served as Executive Vice President. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Development.  With over 20 years of experience in the orthopedic industry, Mr. Valentine served as Vice President of Marketing at ORATEC Interventions, Inc. (a medical device company which was later acquired by Smith & Nephew PLC), and during his eight years with Medtronic Sofamor Danek, he served in various capacities (including Vice President of Marketing for the Rods Division and Group Director for the BMP Biologics program, the Interbody Sales Development effort, and International Sales and Marketing). Mr. Valentine received a B.B.A. in Management and Biomedical Sciences from Western Michigan University.

Patrick Miles has served as our President of Global Products and Services since October 2011. Prior to that he served as President of the Americas from January 2010 to September 2011, Executive Vice President of Product Marketing and Development from January 2007 to December 2009, as our Senior Vice President of Marketing from December 2004 until January 2007, and as our Vice President, Marketing from January 2001 until December 2004. Mr. Miles has over 15 years of experience in the orthopaedic industry. He served as Director of Marketing for ORATEC Interventions, Inc., a medical device company and as a Director of Marketing for Minimally Invasive Systems and Cervical Spine Systems for Medtronic Sofamor Danek. Prior to that, he held several positions with Smith & Nephew. Mr. Miles received a B.S. in Finance from Mercer University.

Quentin Blackford has served as our Executive Vice President of Finance & Investor Relations since July 2012, and prior to that served as Vice President, Finance from January 2011.  Mr. Blackford joined NuVasive in 2009 as our Corporate Controller and has more than 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including his time at Zimmer Holdings, Inc. where he held various roles and responsibilities, including the Director of Finance & Controller for Zimmer’s Dental Division where he was responsible for all finance, accounting and IT activities for the worldwide division, as well as being responsible for the corporate financial planning and analysis function.  Mr. Blackford is a Certified Public Accountant and obtained Bachelor of Science degrees in both Accounting and Business Administration from Grace College.

Jason M. Hannon has served as our Executive Vice President & General Counsel since January 2010. Prior to that, Mr. Hannon served as our Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, General Counsel, and Secretary from January 2009 until December 2009, as our Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary, and as our Vice President of Legal Affairs and Secretary from June 2005 until January 2009. In addition to Legal, Mr. Hannon has responsibility for our Corporate Development and Business Development functions. Prior to joining NuVasive, Mr. Hannon practiced corporate and transactional law at the law firms of Brobeck Phleger & Harrison LLP and Heller Ehrman LLP, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, public and private financing, joint ventures, licensing arrangements, and corporate governance matters. Mr. Hannon also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerome Farris of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Hannon received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.

Matt Link has served as our Executive Vice President of U.S. Sales since January 2013. Prior to that, Mr. Link served as our Senior Vice President of U.S. Sales from January 2012 to December 2012. Mr. Link joined NuVasive in 2006 as an Area Business Manager in Virginia and has over 12 years’ experience in the healthcare industry serving in several regional sales positions with DePuy Orthopedics and DePuy Spine. Mr. Link received a BSEd in Physical Education and Sports Medicine from the University of Virginia.

Tyler P. Lipschultz, Executive Vice President, Global Operations

Executive Vice President, Global Operations

Tyler P. Lipschultz has served as our Executive Vice President of Global Operations since October 2011. Prior to that he served as Executive Vice President of Biologics since January 2011 and our Senior Vice President, Biologics since June 2008. Prior to joining NuVasive, Mr. Lipschultz was a Director at ProtoStar, a medical device incubator that formed Annulex, CVRx, and VERTx, which he co-founded. In 2002, VERTx merged with Spine Wave, where Mr. Lipschultz subsequently served in a variety of roles, including Executive Vice President and General Manager of the mechanical business. Prior to ProtoStar, Mr. Lipschultz held the position of Equity Research Analyst at Piper Jaffray and served in various marketing/product management roles at Stryker, Smith & Nephew, and DePuy. He has 20 years of orthopaedic and spine experience. Mr. Lipschultz received his B.A. in Economics and Business Administration from Kalamazoo College and his M.B.A. from the Executive Program at Krannert School of Management at Purdue University.

Scott Durall has served as our Executive Vice President of Strategic Sales and Operations since December 2012, and prior to that served as a Senior Vice President from January 2010. Mr. Durall joined NuVasive in 2008 in a regional sales leadership role and has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including corporate sales and national account management roles with Boston Scientific and United States Surgical Corp. Mr. Durall received a B.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Kentucky.

Russell Powers, Executive Vice President, International

Executive Vice President, International

Russell Powers has served as our Executive Vice President of International since October of 2012. Prior to that Mr. Powers served as the Senior Vice President of Operations and Senior Vice President of Spine & Biologics, leading Marketing, Product Development and International for ThoracoLumbar, Cervical and Biologics. He was also Vice President of Reimbursement for NuVasive. With over 20 years of orthopaedic and spine experience, Mr. Powers joined NuVasive after a 13-year-career with Medtronic Spinal & Biologics in which he held various leadership positions in Marketing, Sales, and International. He was Vice President, International for Medtronic Spinal & Biologics and International Vice President, Medtronic. He served on the Executive Council and International Leadership Team, and was a Member of the Board for the Medtronic/Weigao Joint Venture. Mr. Powers began his career in orthopaedics with Smith & Nephew as a member of the Trauma Marketing team. He holds a B.B.A. from the University of Memphis.

Takaaki Tanaka has served as our Executive Vice President of Asia Pacific since November 2009. In this role, he drives sales and strategic business initiatives in the Asia Pacific region, working from Tokyo, Japan. Tanaka-san joined NuVasive with a long track record of success in driving revenue and market share gains in the Asia Pacific region, having led the Medtronic Spinal, Biologics and Navigations Divisions to the #1 market share spot for the Asia Pacific region. He brings an extensive 20 years of experience in the spine industry and in dealing with the unique dynamics of the Asia Pacific region.

Executive Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Communications

Carol Cox has served as our Executive Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Communications since July 2014. Ms. Cox is responsible for leading NuVasive’s short- and long-term business strategies, as well as creating and managing a centralized communications function to ensure global alignment of messaging and leveraging of assets across the key areas of corporate communications, investor relations and public affairs. Ms. Cox also oversees NuVasive’s corporate philanthropic and cultural efforts. She joins NuVasive from Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) where she served as Senior Vice President, External Affairs, leading external and internal communications, philanthropy, marketing, government relations and efforts to elevate the Institute’s global recognition. Prior to Sanford- Burnham, she served as Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Corporate Communications at Life Technologies, where she spearheaded global strategies to drive awareness of the company’s major initiatives, enhance its global brand, and maintain its corporate reputation across multiple stakeholder groups including shareholders, the media, government officials, customers and the communities. Before joining Life Technologies, Ms. Cox was Vice President of Investor Relations at CareFusion Corporation and Senior Vice President for Global Corporate Communications and Investor Relations at Barr Pharmaceuticals, where her team received multiple awards from Institutional Investor magazine for outstanding performance. She holds a bachelor’s of arts degree in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia and a certificate in Investor Relations from The University of Connecticut School of Business.

 

Albert Pothier, Senior Vice President, IOS

Albert Pothier has served as our Senior Vice President, Integrated Operative Solutions™ (IOS), since July 2011, a position responsible for the marketing and product development groups for our neurophysiology and computer based technology product and service lines.  Prior to that, Mr. Pothier served as our Vice President of Neuromonitoring from January 2008 to June 2011.  Mr. Pothier originally joined NuVasive in April 2005 and served as our Director and Group Director of Marketing, IOS. In his 24 year career in the orthopaedic industry, Mr. Pothier also worked at Smith & Nephew in various positions in the marketing and development areas, including Director of Marketing, Computer Assisted Surgery, and Director of Market Development. Mr. Pothier received his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and an M.B.A. from Christian Brothers University.

Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations, IMI

Dr. Bryan Cornwall has served as our Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations and Research since April 2012. In this role, he works with the Integrated Operative Solutions (IOS) group with a particular focus on the clinical implementation of intraoperative monitoring services with Impulse Monitoring Inc. (IMI). From June 2008 until April 2012, he served as Senior Vice President of Research and Clinical Resources responsible for various facets of the organization including: surgeon education, post-market research, biomechanical testing, Quality Engineering and Regulatory Affairs.  From January 2004 until June 2008, he served as Vice President of Research and Development, and from 1999 until 2000, he managed NuVasive research efforts. Dr. Cornwall has been working in the medical device industry for more than 15 years and has been responsible for leading research and development teams in the development and testing of proprietary spinal treatment modalities with minimally invasive approaches, spinal fusion constructs, novel resorbable polymer implants, and new fracture fixation devices. Prior to rejoining NuVasive, Dr. Cornwall was with MacroPore Biosurgery for four years, most recently acting as Vice President of Research & Technology. Before joining NuVasive the first time, Dr. Cornwall was with Johnson & Johnson’s trauma division, DePuy-ACE. Dr. Cornwall’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Applied Science in Material Science, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Orthopaedic Biomechanics from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He is the author of 20 peer-reviewed publications, six book chapters, and 15 U.S. patents.

Paul Kosters has served as our Senior Vice President of EMEA since March 2013. Mr. Kosters has over 20 years of experience in the medical device and capital equipment industry. Prior to joining NuVasive, Mr. Kosters served as the President of Europe for Hill-Rom, President of EMEA for Wright Medical and a Business Director for Spinal Europe at Medtronic. Mr. Kosters received a M.B.A. from IESE, Barcelona, Spain and a B.B.A. from European University.
